TheatresportsTM is a competitive form of improvisation in which two
teams challenge each other to off-the-cuff feats of entertainment,
scored by three judges and the audience. It is a unique blend of
theatre, comedy and sport.
TheatresportsTM was invented in the 1950s by British director Keith Johnstone
to liven up his classes in improvisation. Then British censorship rendered such a format
unperformable in public as the Lord Chamberlain could not pre-approve the material.
However, when Keith moved to Calgary in the 1970s and began teaching there,
theatresports was a huge hit with both students and audiences. It is now played
in cities all over the world, in dozens of languages and is one of the most widely
known and appreciated forms of improvised comedy.
