In Maestro Impro^TM, a largeish group of improvisers (10-20) is fitted with a numbered vest each. Two directors (experienced improvisers or teachers) sit in the front row of the audience and select small groups of improvisers to perform scenes, by pulling numbered discs out of a hat. The directors set up the scenes and give any sidecoaching necessary (there is no competition between the directors - they are only there to make the improvisers look good).

At the end of each scene, the audience is invited to give the scene a score from 1 to 5. Every improviser who appeared in the scene receives the same score. When every player has been in two scenes, those with the lowest scores are eliminated, and the show continues with a smaller pool. There are further eliminations after subsequent rounds, until only one improviser is left. This improviser is crowned the Maestro/Maestro.

The beauty of Maestro^TM is that it is deliberately unfair. The best improviser in the world can get trapped in a scene going nowhere and be eliminated early on, so no-one who gets kicked out in the first "cull" should think ill of themselves.

However, it is not completely unfair, and improvisers who play regularly, but rarely survive past the interval should ask whether there is a flaw in their technique.
