Gorilla Theatre
Gorilla TheatreTM is one of our favourite forms of improvisation. It is performed by The Spontaneity Shop under license from Keith Johnstone and the International Theatresports Institute.

In Gorilla TheatreTM, four (or five) players take it in turns to direct each other in improvised scenes. Each director fights to achieve their vision on the stage, setting up and casting the scene, sidecoaching the actors, getting them to create sets or sound effects, making them continue the scene with puppets, or - in dire straits - sacking them all and doing the scene solo.

When the scene is over, the audience gets to vote on whether the director achieved what they set out to. Successful directors are rewarded with a banana (a sticker stuck to their shirt) and unsuccessful directors must pay a forfeit.

Forfeits we have used in the past include:

  • Apologise to every member of the audience individually
  • Improvise an epic poem until the audience begs you to stop
  • Do 10 push ups
  • Pray to God for forgiveness
  • Do the scene again and make it work
