This innovative improvisation show developed at The Spontaneity Shop
combines elements of sit-com, improvised comedy, reality TV and game show, and has
been a huge success wherever it has played - notably at the Edinburgh Festival,
the TV2 Laugh Festival in New Zealand and the Chicago Improv Festival.
We find two audience members (before the show starts, so that we know our volunteers
are game) both looking for a date and make them the stars of their own romantic comedy.
They answer questions about themselves and choose members of our cast of improvisers to
play them and their friends and family. On this basis, improvised scenes are presented
showing them meet, fall in love, argue, etc. A host asks further questions of the guests
in between every scene, so they are constantly allowed input, and they may also be asked to
provide dialogue for the actors or play their parent giving "themselves" advice.
This process taps into the audience's desire to see into (and to take control of) their
own future. We have also found that audience volunteers watching themselves portrayed on
stage have a strong motivation to be truthful in answering our questions - they want to
see themselves portrayed as accurately as possible.
Dreamdate is currently being developed for ITV in association with Pozzitive Television.
A pilot was recorded on 12 November and you can watch an extract here. Watch this space for more news.
