The Spontaneity Shop

Q&A: CAITLIN MILLER

How long have you worked with The Spontaneity Shop?
Since January of 2008. I met them in 2000, when an improv company I worked with - Chicago City Limits - were invited to perform in the Impro World Cup at the Bloomsbury Theatre.
Why do you love improvising?
I love to make up stories with my friends. That only SOUNDS super-cheesy.
What's your favourite improv memory?
There are many, but one great one was when Ms. Jackson (our improv group in NYC) headlined at the Philadelphia Improv Festival. We did a 30 minute 2-person scene on the set of a play.
You're also an actor. What are your favourite ever acting jobs?
My two favorites were both with my theatre company, The Civilians. At the last minute, I stepped in to do a tour of their show Gone Missing and learned the entire role (multiple characters) – including songs and choreography – in just over 24 hours. I LOVE that show, the cast and was thrilled my brain allowed everything in. Most of it even came out in the desired order. The second was doing our show I Am Nobody's Lunch in Edinburgh. Amazing experience creating the show over two years and at Sundance. Sold out run. Fringe First. Gorgeous city. Very fun.
Who are The Civilians?
It's a company founded in 2001. The plays we produce are 'documentary cabaret' (?) pieces, based on interviews. The next one is about evangelicalism/megachurces/battling for one's soul, etc.
Who are Ms. Jackson?
Our beloved all-female improv group in NY. We won the NY Comedy Award for Best Improv Group, in 2004. We wear Adidas track suits. Very street.
You've started working at the hot and happening Spontaneity Shop office in sunny Camden. What do you do?
Whatever they ask of me, and some light emailing.
I hear you and your writing partner, Jennifer Morris, just got a development deal with Disney and ABC for an internet pilot you're writing.
That's correct.
And I also hear you sold another series to Fremantle.
Also true.
What's your maxim for life?
Tend to your joy.
How many degrees of separation are you from Kevin Bacon?
One, we starred together in Footloose (Caitlin's brain version). I did my own gymnastic dancing, though. I dated a poster of him briefly.
Anything else we should know about you?
I love kittens. I really do. It's kind of taking over a lot of my time. Petting cats is one way I tend to my joy.
Would you rather win an Oscar or wield a light saber?
I would like to win a light saber for Best Screenplay.
