You're an experienced improviser but you decided to come to Spontaneity
Shop
workshops. Why is that?
I'd done a lot of improv as a student but it was more of a case of the keen
leading the overly keen then any of us really knowing what we were doing. I
wanted to develop better improv skills and re-learn what I'd forgotten of
the basics and The Spontaneity Shop had a great reputation for doing that.
What group do you currently work with and where can we see you perform?
NSN24 - Non-stop News, www.yournewsagenda.com,
a news themed show with an
improvised content. But the two people most likely to organise our next
show are in/about to be in India.
You guys were previously Improverts. Who are the Improverts?
The Improverts are Edinburgh University Theatre Company's improvised comedy
troupe. They perform at the Bedlam Theatre in Edinburgh every Friday night
during term time and nightly during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Go see
them, they're lovely! www.improverts.com
You came to our workshops with your fellow NSN performers - has that been
fun and would you recommend others attend workshops with friends or colleagues?
It's been great fun! (apart from James Mitchell). It is good to go with
friends but not necessary. You get to know everyone through doing funny
workshop exercises with them.
What do you love about improvising and what's your favourite memory?
I love getting to play like a kid and be silly, that's probably the best
thing about improvisation. My favourite memory is having hot chocolate and
hugging my pet dog while there's a proper thunderstorm going on outside the
house - now stop prying into my private life.
What have you got out of attending Spontaneity Shop workshops?
Story-telling skills as well as loads of really useful improvisation
techniques that I can also use for creative writing. It's also been great
fun and I've got lovely friends out of it (apart from James Mitchell,
obviously).
What do you like about Level 3?
You have to work really hard and it pushes you to new, scary places as a
group. Analyzing shows and focusing on set skills opens up more
possibilities of what you can do on stage. It's tailored to the group and
so you feel you're working on something together which is really satisfying.
Since you've been coming to workshops you've been invited to do Spontaneity
Shop shows. Which shows and will you do more?
Hell on Heels - all girl, all funny improvisation
Right Wing Folk Singers - record breaking number of improv formats in one show.
Battle of Gits - Theatresports show of Spontaneity Shop crew vs ex-Improverts - the re-match is Thursday the 16th November @ 7.30! (if you're reading this you're already on the right website)
I'll do as many more as I'm allowed on stage for.
Would you recommend Spon Shop workshops to others?
Yes! (now please release my family)
How many degrees of separation between you and Kevin Bacon?
5
Would you rather accept an Oscar or wield a light saber?
